Choosing A Repair Company For Your Home

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our homes never needed a repair? One of the biggest budget busters is when a home repair or maintenance issue comes up and I wasn’t planning on it. For this reason, I keep some money in my savings account earmarked specifically for repairs that come up. How do I choose the right repair company? Here are some of my tips…

Three Criteria For Choosing The Best Repair Company For Your Home

  1. Choose a repair company based on their reviews of past repairs and service. This could be from a friend or family member, a neighbor or someone from your church or a coworker. The best advertisement is a previous job well done. Obviously, if you yourself had a good experience in the past, hire them again! No need to take a gamble if you were satisfied before.
  2. You could also choose a repair company based on great reviews online. There are entire websites dedicated to this such as www.angieslist.com.
  3. Choose a repair or maintenance company that is willing to quote you a price upfront. Be leery of someone who comes out and says “well there is no way to know” or a phrase like that. It is possible they don’t know exactly what the problem is, but they should be able to give you their fees for labor, a house call, the fee for a quote and at least SOME ideas on what the parts may be. Remember, you are calling an expert. If you get the feeling from the beginning that they don’t know what they are doing, trust your gut!

Sometimes you don’t have money saved for your repair or don’t want to use a credit card. In which case, you can either look up the problem online and try to narrow down what the issues may be or you could ask some friends if they know anyone who does work on the side. Disclaimer: Sometimes doing a repair yourself costs extra time, money and destruction in the long run. In addition, someone who works on the side may not be certified, have the proper insurance or they may not guarantee their work. Use your best judgement!
