Buying new things can be very satisfying. There are many items I would recommend only buying new, such as mattresses. However, there is more on the DO list for buying used than on the DON’T list. Once I changed my mindset to buy more used, I started saving BIG! Here are five things I commonly buy used and don’t even consider buying new.

Exercise Equipment – Buy Used To Save BIG

This is one of my favorites! Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist often have exercise equipment for way less than retail. Think rowers and treadmills and even weights. Facebook Marketplace will even let you set an alert with key words to notify you when what you are looking for as been posted.

Books – Buy Used To Save BIG

I am an avid reader and often devour a book a week. I got in a bad habit a few years back of using my Kindle. It was just too easy to use 1-click to buy books. Even though they aren’t that much money, those little purchases of $3.99 or $9.99 really added up over a year. Now I make an effort to be mindful of my book purchases and try to rent them from the library or purchase them used at garage sales or thrift stores. An added bonus of that is being able to pass along a book I love to a friend or family member.

Clothing

Everyone knows where to find used clothes these days. Another way of looking at this is to say “previously owned” since I often buy with the tags still on. ThredUp and Poshmark are some of my favorite sites or apps for this!

Cars

You can look up many articles on how much vehicles depreciate as soon as you drive them off the lot. The amount you save increases even more when you consider the extra interest on a loan. Make sure you have researched all of the financial options before you head to the dealership.

Tools – Buy Used To Save BIG

Hand tools are sturdy and durable. A hammer, screwdrivers and pliers are good for years to come. These can be great items to purchase used and will still last you a lot of time. You may need to be more selective when looking at power tools or equipment to make sure it is in good shape, but you can save a bundle on those as well!
