Encouraging Wellness In The Workplace
Encouraging wellness in your small business goes a long way in keeping happy and healthy employees or team members happy. I feel that my staff is my greatest asset at all times. Their health and their over all mental state and feelings about our business are so important. I wanted to make sure our workplace measures up with so much emphasis in the media and pop culture on self care, balance and wellness. Today we will discuss three ways to easily incorporate some of these things at your small business.
Create Incentives Around Wellness Activities
You could offer some contests, but keeping wellness in mind, I would focus on something each person could attain on their own. Most people have health trackers these days, such as the ever popular Fitbit. Even those of us that don’t usually have a pedometer working in our phones at all times. One idea would be to reward each person who achieved a certain amount of steps each day. Or it could be beating their average from the previous month. Another idea would be everyone signing up for certain activities…a 5k on the weekend, obstacle course with friends etc. Then they send in photos or post and check in on the company’s Facebook Page to show they did it. Incentives could include time off, a lunch out or tickets to an event!
Emphasize Proper Breaks Throughout The Day
Many employees will work, work, work without complaining. However, it doesn’t mean they are not overwhelmed. Many of my team members go, go, go but deep down their minds and bodies are yearning for a break. Encourage your team to get up from their desks every two hours. Take a walk around the building, eat a piece of fruit or another healthy snack or get a breath of fresh air.
Design Your Office or Place of Business With Wellness In Mind
There are many ways to encourage wellness in your small business. Offering desks that are “standing” desks is a great option and I have noticed these have come way down in cost over the past few years. You could also support a walking club at lunch. And although a break room is easy to turn into a junk closet, it sure is nice to give your employees a space they can be comfortable in.
