How Does Couponing Effect Your Budget?

Ahhhh the dreaded shopping trip. This is one area the budget easily goes awry. It is so easy to spend too much. Or to be enticed by items we don’t plan on. Is couponing the answer to lowering your bill? It may be!

Does Couponing Save You Or Cost You?

Well, that depends. Will clipping or searching for coupons make you buy things you don’t need? It may. A strict budget means being strict with couponing. If you clip coupons for things you don’t need, it could cost you. If you buy toilet paper because you have a coupon, but you already have 300 rolls…maybe not. Sure it may save you in the long run, but is it really in your budget to pre-buy toilet paper?! If you clip coupons for things you need right then, and are buying today it can be a real life saver!

How Can You Start Seeing A Change?

If you have a monthly or weekly allowance for groceries, start by budgeting the money you have. For instance, if you have $300 for groceries, make a list that will total about $300. That way any coupons you find and use will only save you money. There are many ways to search for coupons online. This includes using apps for stores near you like Meijer’s mPerks Program. You can also look through your weekly papers for inserts and even your mail. Organize the coupons by expiration date or type. The most important thing is that you only use the coupons for things you need and plan to buy anyway. No one really needs to 10 deoderants or 20 jars of spaghetti sauce at once. It is also useful to search blogs or the internet for information. Which stores allow you to use expired coupons? Which stores allow you to use two coupons on one item?

How Does It Effect My Budget?

Well, provided that you stick with a plan and a budget, it frees up some money! Use it for a treat. Save it for a vacation. Pay off debt! The sky is the limit with money you set aside that you won’t be spending! Good for you!

Is It Worth It?

We don’t recommend getting caught up in couponing. It can often lead people trying to SAVE money, to SPEND money. There are a reason stores put them out after all! If you have the time to spend doing organized couponing, go for it. If you trust yourself to be disciplined, DEFINITELY go for it.
