IRS Furlough Dates
Back in May, the IRS announced that it will be closing its offices for a handful of dates during the summer. These dates include May 24th and June 14th which have already passed and the upcoming July 5th, July 22nd and August 30th. All IRS offices will be closed these days. Returns will not be processed and no compliance-related activities will take place.
These days are treated as furlough days for employees, not federal holidays. Therefore, this does not excuse taxpayers from adhering to deadlines for tax due dates. EFTPS, the electronic tax filing system, will still be open so taxpayers are expected to call in any required payments. But if you’ve received notice from the IRS to respond and provide documentation on an issue by a furlough date, you will have until the next business day to do so.
There may be a few additional dates announced in the future, if necessary. Be sure to plan accordingly!
