Resolutions For Your Small Business – Part 1

Personal resolutions are all the rage, but I like to make resolutions for my business as well! Of course the new year isn’t the only time I make goals or focus on change, but I do love a fresh planner and my new calendar. They inspire me to think outside of my box. Therefore I always make some new goals for my business this time of year!

Steps For Creating Resolutions

  1. Review: First, I start out with taking a look at what worked well this last year and what bombed. Some may say “what needs improvement” but for me I like to face the facts. Certain incentives, promotions or campaigns may not have worked at all. I believe failing is for…learning!
  2. Brainstorm: I like to give myself some space to do this by myself. Go to a coffee shop (or out of my normal environment) and let my brain wander. Once I have some ideas or thoughts for the new year, I like to ask my team about some aspects. I feel it is important to let them brainstorm and make decisions that can actually come to fruition. Instead of asking them “what do you want?” I would ask “what product would you like featured in March?” That way they can see their ideas come to life in real time.
  3. Create A Specific Action Plan: You can do this for one quarter, half a year or the whole year. This is the time we get to take all of our ideas and decisions and assign a specific timeline. Specificity is so important…I cannot emphasize it enough! I often fail at lofty goals like “losing weight” or “getting healthy.” However, I succeed at goals like “move thirty minutes, five times a week” or “drink two quarts of water a day.” Use this same philosophy breaking down your small business goals.
