Ways To Save Money At The Big Game

One of my families favorite things to do it to enjoy a big game downtown. My husband’s favorite is to cheer on our Detroit Tigers. Even though I don’t really like sports, it is great to enjoy the spirit and energy of a major league game. Since living near Detroit, I have been able to enjoy the Tigers, Red Wings and Lions. As much as I enjoy hanging out with my husband and cheering on the home team, I DO NOT enjoy the big league price tag. Today I wanted to share my top 3 “ways to save” tips for enjoying your outing on a budget!

Go In With A Plan – Ways To Save

I quickly learned when dating that my husband was the spender. He would go to the ATM on our way to the game and take out some cash. And wouldn’t you know…that cash would be gone by the end of the game. As enjoyable as this was when dating, we quickly reigned it in when we combined our money. Therefore, my first bit of advice is to go in with a plan. What will you spend on parking, food, souvenirs or the raffle? Choose your amount, take that with you in cash, and stick to it!

Research Parking

In some cities, the stadiums and arenas have well planned out parking lots of structures. Not the case in Michigan. When you head downtown, you can pay anywhere from ZERO dollars to $40 just to park your car and walk to the game. My advice is to do some research before you go and if you do choose to save by parking further away, you can at least be familiar with your parking.

Plan Your Food or Concessions – Ways To Save

My favorite way to save money at a big game is to eat BEFORE I even go. We like to cook at home or pick a favorite and affordable spot by our house before we head downtown. Once you are within a few blocks of the game, everything is a premium. If eating in the park is part of the experience for you, don’t go on an empty stomach. Have something healthy and inexpensive before you go and then choose a special treat once you get there and really savor it!
