Tips from the IRS to Prevent Identity Theft

Identity theft leading to fraud is one of the most rampant problems that tax payers face today. It is generally easy for thieves to get ahold of your social security number or other important information if you don’t protect it carefully enough. The IRS has given multiple tips in order to educate and inform tax payers on staying safe with their identity. Remember, being a victim can potentially cost you lots of money and time, making these ever more important.

  • Don’t carry your Social Security card or any documents with your SSN on it.

  • Don’t give a business your SSN just because they ask. Give it only when required.

  • Protect your financial information.

  • Check your credit report every 12 months.

  • Secure personal information in your home.

  • Protect your personal computers by using firewalls, anti-spam/virus software, update security patches and change passwords for internet accounts.

  • Don’t give personal information over the phone, through the mail, or on the internet unless you have initiated the contact or you are sure you know who you are dealing with.
