Can You Deduct Your Pet?

We all know at least one person that refers to their pet as their “child.” Sadly it isn’t possible to claim our pets as dependents on our taxes, well not legally at least. The costs of pet parenthood add up quickly between veterinary care, food, and miscellaneous supplies. As a pet owner myself I started thinking about what sort of pet related items might be deductible.
There are quite a few deductions allowed depending on the situation.

1. Most of the costs of caring for, training, and grooming a service/guide dog are deductible.

2. If you volunteer for a charitable organization, like a rescue, some of your expenses can be deducted.

3. If you have a guard dog working for you then you have some deductions coming your way.

4. If your pet is related to your profession or draws some sort of business income you can claim some deductions. These include animal breeders, dog walkers, trainers, etc.

5. The cost of moving your pet can even have a percentage deducted.
