Numerico Goes to Michigan’s Thumb.

As an official final summer get-away I recently took a trip to Michigan’s Thumb. This was my first time visiting the tip of the thumb, but it definitely won’t be my last.

I stayed at a cottage in Sebewaing, which (except for the spiders) was absolutely delightful. Around the area there are plenty of cabins for rent, as well as camp grounds. If you go near the end of the season you’re sure to get a good price. Just don’t forget your bug spray!

Feeling adventurous I went to Port Austin for a kayaking trip. Port Austin Kayak offers very reasonable pricing for kayaking as well as bike rentals! I recommend calling ahead to reserve your kayak, but you can explore the town while you wait. My group opted for Turnip Rock Trail, which is one of the most beautiful natural rock formations I have seen. The trail wasn’t too rough and everyone in attendance was a beginner. We made sure we took our time to enjoy the undeveloped scenery, which included sea caves. Once we reached Turnip rock we took a break for swimming, snacking, and pictures! Don’t let the 6 mile round trip description scare you away, this was a fantastic experience.

Disclaimer: Turnip Rock is not made of Turnips. You are advised to bring your own snacks.

Additionally, I also caught the tail end of the infamous Caseville Cheeseburger Festival. It was a midsized festival, but there was plenty of entertainment as well as cheeseburgers. It was truly a family event that offered attractions for adults and children. On the schedule this year was a craft show, where I picked up some Michigan made fudge that rivaled that of Mackinac Island. They also held a children’s coloring contest, cute baby contest, glow golf, sandcastle contest, and frog jumping contest. A personal favorite of mine is the cardboard boat racing contest, it’s amazing to see all the work people put into their doomed boats. If you’re feeling guilty from all of the cheeseburgers and ice cream that you’re sure to consume they also held a Cheeseburger 5K Fun Run. If you enjoy food, sunshine, and music this is something to put on your “To Do” list.

If you’re planning your own trip to the thumb there is something to do with every season. Caseville also offers Ribstock, Pumpkin Festival, and Shanty Days (a winter themed festival). Enjoy some of the local food; which includes fresh caught fish and locally grown produce. Drop by the Main Street Café & Bakery in Pigeon for the breakfast buffet, which includes pie (I promise you won’t regret it). Stop by a farm stand and take something home with you, if you’re lucky you might get the chance to play with some adorable baby farm animals like I did. Most importantly make sure you take the time to slow down and take it all in.
