Overboard On Holiday Gifts? Ways To Reign It In…

December will be here tomorrow and I haven’t started my shopping yet. I know I should start this week, but first, I know I need a plan. Without a plan, my love of gift giving will get the best of me and I will likely go overboard. As I do…almost EVERY SINGLE YEAR. If I have a plan, I know I will make better decisions and I won’t have to live with the consequence of over overspending. I find it easy to get caught up in the holiday spirit and impulse buy more than I planned. For that reason, I put together a few of my suggestions for reigning it in this holiday season!

Suggestions For Reigning In Spending To Keep From Going Overboard

  1. Make a list and check it LOTS of times. Always have a plan! Make your self a cup of coffee or tea and sit down to think about what you really want to give each person in your life. Don’t get caught up in keeping up, and focus on what will bring joy to that person.
  2. Include a budget with your list. I have to make myself do this. I find it hard to put a price tag on people, so I have been trying to think of it differently. Instead I am putting a price tag on my piece of mind. This insures that my January budget stays in check and I know I have stayed in line. There is no price on financial peace!
  3. Take some time to compare options and prices. I just want to shop on whim, but I know I cost myself more money this way. Keep in mind you don’t have to make a big production of hopping from store to store. Just take a couple hours and sit down to compare online prices to in-store and check around for the better deal!
  4. Stick TO IT, and celebrate the season in other ways. Know you are enough and the thought you put into your gift was enough. My life is not the measure of my gifts or the money I spend on others. I like to enjoy the season by connecting. I make it a point to meet a friend for a coffee date. Or to take a tour of the lights. I write all my aunts a heartfelt holiday note or letter! Make it a point to celebrate your season in a new way this year.
